How to Conceal Utility Boxes in your yard!

Let's Do It!

Block, Hide, Obscure, or even Decorate these eyesores!

There are several ways to hide your home's unsightly infrastructure on your property. These naturally include your home's air conditioning units, swimming pool pumps and motors, and any above ground natural gas, or propane tanks. Even the home barbecue grill, that may not be so great to look at. In addition to these, homeowner's nowadays often find utilities such as the local electric company. and the cable company having easements to, and placing their equipment onto your

residential property. I once lived at a property with an electrical box prominently displayed in my back yard.
For more information on easements, check out this article on - Utility Easements.
Whether it's enclosing your own air conditioning, or a utility box, the most common way to obscure these eyesores is to Fence them in. We can do this in such a way as to make it a feature of your landscape. Perhaps a matching addition to your existing fence. Or a totally new fence of a different size and material. Another way to go is to decorate/obscure it, with greenery, or a landscaping detail such as a berm with decorative plants & flowers. Hedges or rose bushes, or other tall screening plants are another great idea. We've seen rocks to cover it, bird houses on top of them, tall grasses and so forth. Google it and you can find many ideas for this method.
Lattice is a very Popular Design!
What ever way you choose to block or obscure it, keep in mind you will have to leave an open access, or an access door for work personnel to get to it. If it is a unit that needs open air to cool it's machinery, or for air to operate it, then absolutely do not obstruct that. We normally give the air conditioning unit between 2 and 3 feet, from the fence. For public utilities it is a good idea to contact the utility and check for any "set back" restrictions they may have before placing anything around the unit. Be sure to respect the utility's restrictions, they can remove anything that encumbers their access to the piece of equipment.
Vinyl Enclosure!

A good Fence builder, can provide a solid structure to totally block the utility from view. Or a see through enclosure that works primarily for security. We can design a fence where air flows through the fence, or have it raised a few inches to a foot off the surface of the ground for a good air flow that way.
Any structure that is built around a utility box, or any box that may require maintenance or box replacement, should be easily removable by one person. That means being built with screws and not nails. It should be constructed in panels so as to facilitate it's fast and easy removal. We can also build them with latches for fast easy removal. Just unlatch and remove the whole section. Utility fences can often be much shorter than a perimeter fence around your property. Utility enclosures can be of any Fencing material to include, Chain Link, Vinyl, Wood, and Ornamental Aluminum!
As always "Call Before You Dig"  and be sure to hire a Fence contractor who understands the unique service of enclosing utilities. Good luck!
